Hariharan is a prolific vocalist, active in ghazal and film. Born in Kerala, he built a strong reputation as a playback singer before forming the successful Colonial Cousins duet group with Mumbai-based singer-composer Lesle Lewis. Other fusion forays have included his ‘Urdu Blues’ album featuring sitar, sarangi, and tabla, but he anchors his style around ghazals - Persian-derived poetic songs. Alongside music he has bachelor's degrees in science and law, and is fluent in five languages.
"People think I’m mad, but also traditional. You have to keep yourself innovative and make sure your music interests you, you have to bring something new to the table and people will follow you"
